Star Bread

Prep Time: 30 min.
Bake Time: 25-30 min.
Servings: 8-10
Difficulty: Expert

This lightly sweetened Star Bread is as delicious as it is beautiful.

Ingredients

12 Rhodes White Dinner Rolls, dough thawed but still cold
4-5 tablespoons jam or chocolate-hazelnut spread
1-2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 tablespoon coarse sugar
powdered sugar

Instructions

Spray counter with non-stick cooking spray. Combine 3 rolls together and roll them into a 10-inch circle. Let rest while you repeat this step to make 3 more 10-inch circles.

Carefully lift the first circle onto a sprayed baking sheet. Spread a heaping tablespoon of jam or chocolate hazelnut spread thinly on the circle leaving a clean, 1/2-inch edge. Carefully lift the second circle of dough on to the top of the first, press the edges together firmly. Repeat the layering process with remaining circles, leaving the top circle bare.

Leaving a 2-inch circle in the center uncut, cut 16 equal strips from the center to the edge through all the layers.

Take two adjacent strips by the ends and twist them away from each other 2 ½ times. Pull the two edges together and pinch making one point on the star. Repeat to make 7 more points.

Cover with sprayed wrap and let rise 30 minutes in a warm place. Uncover and re-pinch points. Brush with butter and sprinkle coarse sugar.

Bake for 25-30 minutes at 350⁰F. Cover with foil after 20 minutes to prevent over browning. Let cool slightly before sprinkling with powdered sugar over the entire star.

I’m afraid that would be too long to leave it in the refrigerator. I think it would raise too much and you would lose the detail of the star. But I think if you made it and baked it and maybe even under bake it, you could finish baking it or warm it that morning. I hope that helps you! Yes, you can certainly use a loaf of bread to make this recipe! One loaf of Rhodes Bread Dough is equivalent to 12 Rhodes Dinner Rolls. And the video for this recipe is a great help!

Can you use an almond filling in this instead of jam or chocolate hazelNut spread?

I’m sure you could use almond filling. The jam does give them a pretty color but the almond filling would be just fine. Enjoy!

Thanks for your question! Yes, I think your dough may have been too cold. The gluten in the dough needs to relax. So roll your dough out the best that you can and then cover it with sprayed plastic wrap and let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then roll it out again. You may have to do this several times before your dough relaxes enough to roll it out to the desire shape. Hope this helps!

    Hello,
at the very top of the site it reads:
    “Star Bread
    Prep Time: 30 min.
    Bake Time: 70 min.
    Servings: 8-10
    Difficulty: Expert”

The video says to bake on 15-2o minutes. I suspect that the entire recipe time from start to finish is 7o minutes? The recipe itself is inconsistent as well, as it reads: “Bake for 25-30 minutes at 350⁰F. Cover with foil after 20 minutes to prevent over browning. Remove from oven, brush with butter and sprinkle coarse sugar in the center. Let cool slightly before sprinkling with powdered sugar over the entire star.” Again, the video shows a brushing of the butter and addition of the coarse sugar PRIOR to baking for 15-20 minutes…
