Scones or Elephant Ears

Prep Time: 10 min.
Bake Time: 1-2 min.
Servings: 1-11
Difficulty: Beginning

Whether you call it fried dough, elephant ears, scones, etc., this is a delicious treat to eat!

Ingredients

12 Rhodes Yeast Dinner Rolls, dough thawed to room temperature
vegetable oil
powdered sugar, butter, jam or honey, if desired

Instructions

Pour oil 2 to 3-inches deep into a sauce pan or an electric frying pan, and heat to medium high setting or 375 degrees F.

Flatten each roll into a 4-inch circle. Fry dough on each side until golden brown (about 30 seconds each side). Remove and drain on paper towel.

Serve hot. Sprinkle with powdered sugar or serve with butter, honey or jam, if desired.

Baking Notes

Fry Bread is a great treat to make while camping. Pack a bag of Rhodes Dinner Rolls in your cooler and use vegetable shortening to fry them for easier cleanup; scoop it right back into its container after it cools. Camp stoves can be less precise, so heat the oil until a small piece of dough immediately bubbles when placed in the pan.

Will the white bread dough work as well?

You can certainly use our Bread Dough. Just let it thaw completely and divide into pieces.

DO you need to let the bread dough raise and then roll it out

You really don’t need to let the dough raise just let it thaw so you can work with it. But if you do happen to let it raise that’s fine too. Just stretch it out and fry in the oil. Enjoy!

Can this be done in an air fryer instead of oil in a pan?

Thanks for your timely question! We have tried this and unfortunately it isn’t the best way to make fry bread. The dough makes a big bubble and just kind of bakes it instead of making a true fry bread. So give it a try but we were not happy with the results.

Do you know how long it typically takes for the frozen bread dough to thaw?

That is difficult to answer. It really depends of the warmth of your kitchen.

You can put 2 quarts of boiling water on the bottom rack of your oven, preheat your oven to 200 degrees and then turn off the oven, then place the bread in a loaf pan, put in the oven. That will help it to thaw faster. But you have to watch it so it doesn’t over raise and fall.

Leaving it on the counter could take 3+ hours (depending on the warmth of your kitchen).

Yes, it is such a good product to make fry bread, Navajo tacos or scones, especially for camping. If you are taking them camping they are great to put in your cooler to keep other things cold too! Thanks for taking the time to share your nice comments!

You should flatten the rolls. That makes it much easier to fry evenly in the hot oil. Hope this helps!
