Babka

Prep Time: 30 min.
Bake Time: 40 min.
Servings: 8
Difficulty: Beginner

Chocolate and bread swirled together make this loaf just as beautiful as it is delicious.

Ingredients

12 Rhodes White Dinner Rolls, dough thawed to room temperature
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup chocolate chips
2 Tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
egg

Instructions

Use a 8.5 x 4.5 x 2.5 inch loaf pan

Combine rolls and roll out on a sprayed surface to a 18×10 inch rectangle. Cover with sprayed plastic wrap and let rest.

Combine butter, sugar, cocoa, and cinnamon in a bowl and cream together with a fork to get out all the lumps. Remove plastic wrap and spread mixture evenly over the dough. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the top of the mixture. Roll up the dough starting at the 18 inch side creating a long rope. Cut the rope in half lengthwise and twist both halves 3 times around. Wrap the two twisted halves around each other and place in a sprayed loaf pan. Cover with sprayed plastic wrap and let rise 30 minutes to one hour or until doubled in size. Whisk together egg and Brush over the top of the loaf. Bake at 350ºF for 30-35 minutes.

You can certainly make it from a loaf of bread. Just thaw the bread dough and divide it into 12 pieces and follow the instructions from there. Happy Baking!

What size loaf pan? I did this and it was too much dough for my pan. Thank you.

Sorry that happened! The recipe calls for an 8 1/2″ x 4 1/2 loaf pan. If you are using the Dinner size rolls, 12 shouldn’t be too many for that size pan. Are you using the Texas size roll? If you are that might affect the recipe. Also you might try baking it a little longer and you might have to cover the top with foil the last 5-10 minutes so the top doesn’t get too brown and it isn’t baked thoroughly. Hope this helps! Why would you divide the loaf into 12 pieces if the next step is to combine them? I just roll the loaf out and go from there.
One of my grandsons doesn’t like cinnamon so I omit that but I add a teaspoon of vanilla to the butter mixture and it is excellent.
I have never had any left after breakfast.

I’m not understanding why, if using the loaf, would you need to cut it into 12 pieces of you’re only going to combine it again and roll it out? Please explain. Thank you!

If you are using a loaf of Bread Dough, you do not need to divide. Some of our consumers do not have access to the bread loaves, so you may use either one. One loaf of Bread Dough equals 12 Dinner Rolls. Hope this helps you!

Sorry this probably didn’t come in time. But you are right! If it is browning too quickly, yes, then cover it with aluminum foil and continue baking until it is baked all the way through.

I watched this being made on a cooking show. They covered it in simple syrup before baking. Is that good to do?

We don’t have a fruit version. If you find a recipe for that I’m sure you could use our dough to make it.
